OxyContin 40 mg

OxyContin 40mg is an extended-release opioid pain reliever containing oxycodone hydrochloride. It is used to treat severe, chronic pain (e.g., cancer pain, severe arthritis) that requires round-the-clock care. Unlike immediate-release oxycodone, OxyContin releases the medicine over 12 hours, giving long-lasting pain relief.

How It Works:
Oxycodone binds to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, reducing pain and developing tolerance. It also causes dopamine release, which can result in euphoria, contributing to its high addiction potential.

Dosage and Administration of OxyContin 40 mg:
Only for opioid-tolerant patients (those already on opioids such as morphine or hydrocodone).

The typical starting dose is 10-20mg every 12 hours, modified according to pain severity.

40mg pills are for patients who have already stabilized on lower doses.

Must be consumed whole; crushing, chewing, or dissolving can result in a deadly overdose.

Side effects are common:

Drowsiness and dizziness.

Constipation (often requires laxatives)

Nausea/vomiting

Dry mouth, itching.

Serious risks:

Respiratory depression (slow, shallow breathing)

Addiction and Dependence:

Overdose (symptoms include excessive sleepiness, pinpoint pupils, and unconsciousness).

If abruptly stopped, withdrawal symptoms may include irritability, muscle discomfort, and insomnia.

Black Box Warnings:
High addiction risk, even at prescribed levels.

Respiratory depression can be life-threatening, especially in non-opioid users.

Misuse is possible (snorting or injecting results in an overdose).

Precautions:
Never mix with alcohol, benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax), or other depressants as this raises the risk of overdose.

Avoid in patients with asthma, intestinal blockage, or head injury.

Pregnancy and nursing: May cause neonatal withdrawal syndrome.

Tapering is essential to avoid withdrawal.

Overdose & Antidotes:
An overdose can be reversed with Naloxone (Narcan), but it must be administered immediately.
